How to Apply Sewing Machine Oil
Applying sewing machine oil is not very difficult - just follow these steps to ensure your machine is well-oiled and ready for use:
1. Start by unplugging the machine and removing any fabric or thread.
2. Refer to your sewing machine manual to identify the areas that need oiling. If you don’t have a manual, focus on the bobbin area, hook race, and moving joints.
3. With the sewing machine oil bottle, use the long neck and nozzle to carefully drop 1-2 drops of oil onto the identified areas.
4. Once you’re done, carefully re-cap the sewing machine oil bottle.
5. Before you start your next sewing project, run a few test stitches on scrap fabric to remove any excess oil.
When you’re oiling for the first time, it’s possible that there might be some leakage or excess oil. This is normal, and you can simply dab the area with a scrap of fabric.

Sewing Machine Oil FAQs
Which machines can I use this sewing machine oil on?
Our sewing machine lubricant is suitable for almost all sewing machines, including Singer, Brother, Janome, and Overlockers.
How often should I oil my machine?
The answer to this depends on your usage. If you’re a business owner, or professional tailor who sews frequently, it’s recommended to oil your machine after every 8–10 hours of use.
As a general guide, you can also oil it after every 3–4 bobbin changes, or every few months for light to moderate use. Heavy fabric users, daily sewers, and those with older machines may need to oil more often. Always check your machine’s manual for specific guidance.
Will this oil stain my fabric?
It won’t stain your fabric if you use only 1-2 drops and dab away the excess oil. We do recommend doing a quick test stitch on scrap fabric.
Is this sewing machine oil the same as sewing machine grease?
No! Sewing machine grease is thicker and usually used for gears, whereas sewing machine oil is lighter in weight and is mainly used for the mechanisms in the sewing machine.
How do I store sewing machine oil?
The best way to store sewing machine oil is to seal it and store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Can I buy sewing machine oil in bulk?
Yes. If you’re running your own business, organising your classroom or a sewing group, you can contact us. Our team will help you with trade prices and fast delivery across the UK.
